Ghana's Tallest Man Sulemana Abdul Samed Dies at 33
Sulemana Abdul Samed, known as Awuche and recognized as Ghana's tallest man, has died at 33 from complications tied to Marfan syndrome.
At Tamale Teaching Hospital in northern Ghana, Sulemana Abdul Samed—commonly called Awuche and recognized as Ghana's tallest man—passed away on Monday at age 33. He had been admitted following deterioration of infected wounds on his legs, despite receiving ongoing medical care.
Marfan syndrome, a rare hereditary disorder affecting connective tissue, shaped Samed's life and health trajectory. His extreme stature resulted partly from this condition, which he managed alongside treatment for gigantism.
The hospital where he spent his final days sits roughly 160 kilometres away from Gambaga, his home village in northern Ghana. Family accounts reveal that during hospitalization, Samed initially appeared to improve before his condition worsened unexpectedly.
Sulemana Abdul Kudus, a relative, spoke of the deceased as someone known throughout his community for kindness and generosity. His death has stirred considerable mourning in Ghana, especially across the northern part of the country where he held status as a public figure.
Connective tissue complications stemming from Marfan syndrome represent a serious health risk, with leg infections emerging as one such documented risk. The infected sores requiring his hospitalization exemplify the medical struggles that individuals with this disorder face.
For his family and the regions where Samed was known, his passing represents a profound loss.
