Ghana's Tallest Man Sulemana Abdul Samed Dies at 33

Sulemana Abdul Samed, popularly known as Awuche, recognized as Ghana's tallest man, passed away at the age of 33 on Monday at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. He was admitted for treatment of infected sores on his legs, which were complications linked to Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting connective tissues.

Awuche, who stood at 7ft 4in (223cm) as measured in late 2022, had been diagnosed with gigantism in his 20s. His relative, Sulemana Abdul Kudus, described him as generous and kind-hearted, noting the shock and sadness in their community of Gambaga following his death.

Businessman Ibrahim Mahama, brother of former President John Mahama, had supported Awuche's medical care. Despite responding well to treatment, Awuche died on Monday morning, leaving a legacy of national recognition for his hometown.

His rapid growth began at age 22 while working in Accra, and he had to abandon his ambition of becoming a driver due to his condition.
