Infantino Set for Re-Election as FIFA President Amid Controversy

Gianni Infantino, the current president of FIFA, is expected to be re-elected for a fourth term after gaining the backing of over 200 of FIFA's 211 member associations ahead of the presidential election scheduled for next year. Notably, Germany is among the few associations that have not yet officially supported Infantino.

The nomination deadline for FIFA presidents is in November, and as of now, there are no challengers to Infantino's position. Despite the upcoming election, Infantino faces backlash regarding FIFA's handling of various contentious issues during the 2026 World Cup, including the suspension of U.S.

Forward Folarin Balogun, which was lifted following intervention from U.S. President Donald Trump.

This incident has caused tensions among European federations, with UEFA raising objections about the exclusion of Somalia’s referee, Omar Artan, from the competition. FIFA's annual Congress is set to take place in New York, where financial matters and development funding will be the primary focus.
