Olopade Optimistic for Nigeria's Medal Prospects in 2026

Bukola Olopade, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), announced that Team Nigeria is on track to meet its medal targets for the 2026 Commonwealth Games after a successful performance in Glasgow. On Sunday, Ruth Asuquo Nyong secured a silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, lifting a total of 168kg (75kg in the snatch and 93kg in the clean and jerk).

Olopade noted that Nyong's achievement exceeded expectations, as the initial projection was for a bronze medal. He expressed confidence that the athletics team could contribute significantly to Nigeria's medal tally, aiming for seven to eight gold medals.

Olopade commended the athletes, coaches, and officials for their dedication and highlighted the renewed identity of Nigerian sports. He reaffirmed the NSC's commitment to athlete welfare under the leadership of Chairman Shehu Dikko, emphasizing the importance of recognition and support for athletes.
