Team Nigeria Aims for Medal Success at 2026 Commonwealth Games

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed that Team Nigeria is on course to achieve its medal targets for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, following a successful performance in Glasgow. Ruth Asuquo Nyong secured a silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, lifting a total of 168kg, which included 75kg in the snatch and 93kg in the clean and jerk.

Hon. Bukola Olopade, the Director General of NSC and Team Nigeria’s Chef de Mission, expressed that this achievement indicates that the team’s medal projections remain on track, noting that Nyong exceeded expectations as she was anticipated to win a bronze medal.

Olopade also expressed confidence that athletics could significantly enhance Nigeria's medal tally, predicting seven to eight gold medals from that discipline. He praised the athletes, coaches, and officials for their dedication and highlighted the importance of athlete welfare in the Commission’s reforms under Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko.
