Global Energy Investment to Reach $3.4 Trillion by 2026

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global investment in energy is expected to reach $3.4 trillion by 2026, with renewables attracting approximately $665 billion. The report indicates that around $2.2 trillion is spent annually on global energy, with a significant focus on electrification, energy storage, and low-emission fuels.

Investments in electrification infrastructure are projected to approach $1.6 trillion by 2026, with annual spending on electric grid projects nearing $550 billion. Battery storage investments are anticipated to exceed $100 billion.

Despite a decline in fossil fuel investments, particularly in crude oil, which is expected to fall below $500 billion, coal investments are projected to rise sharply, reaching $180 billion, largely driven by China. The report also highlights the growing importance of energy efficiency, with around $350 billion currently invested globally.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol stated that current energy security challenges are reshaping global investment strategies, paralleling significant changes seen during the oil shocks of the 1970s.
