Global Anglican Leaders Break from Archbishop of Canterbury

Global orthodox Anglican leaders have officially cut ties with the Archbishop of Canterbury, signaling a major restructuring of the Anglican Communion and a definitive split in leadership. This decision was announced following a meeting of the Global Anglican Council held in Abuja from March 3 to March 6, which included 347 bishops and 121 lay clerics representing 27 provinces worldwide.

The newly elected chair, Archbishop Laurent Mbanda, stated that the Archbishop of Canterbury's leadership has failed to uphold essential biblical discipline. The council criticized the Church of England's leadership for compromising biblical teachings and declared that future participation in Canterbury-led meetings would be prohibited.

The resolution aims to ensure legal autonomy for provinces and to amend individual constitutions to remove references to the Canterbury council. The Jerusalem Declaration was affirmed as the sole confession of faith required for membership.

The council's actions are intended to emphasize Christian unity based on truth rather than institutional coexistence.
