Godly Showpromoter: Pioneer of Obito Highlife Music

John Okoduwa, popularly known as Godly Showpromoter, is a significant figure in Esan music, recognized as a pioneer of Obito Highlife music. Born in 1948 in Uromi, Edo State, he was inspired to pursue music after witnessing Sir Victor Uwaifo perform.

He joined Uwaifo’s band in Benin City, where he honed his musical skills. Godly Showpromoter modernized indigenous Esan sounds, incorporating instruments like guitars and saxophones, leading to the creation of Obito Highlife music, which resonated with local communities.

Unlike many of his contemporaries who performed in elite venues, he focused on community events such as funerals and weddings, earning widespread popularity. His notable songs include "Osenebula Nomagbon," "Shokolokobagoshi," and "Nigeria My Country," which often convey messages of morality and unity.

Additionally, he has played a crucial role as a mentor to younger musicians, helping to sustain and expand the influence of Obito Highlife music in Esanland.
