INEC Conducts Bye-Elections to Prepare for 2027 Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has conducted legislative bye-elections in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi, and Delta states, which INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, described as vital for testing electoral systems in preparation for the 2027 general elections. The bye-elections covered the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State, Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State, Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State, and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.

Amupitan stated that these elections allowed the Commission to evaluate its logistics, technology, and administrative readiness. He emphasized that every electoral contest is significant for the Commission's preparations, providing essential operational lessons.

The Commission aims to use off-cycle elections to identify areas for improvement and enhance its systems. Amupitan noted that the Commission is committed to electoral integrity and has mechanisms to address operational challenges.
