INEC Schedules By-Elections for September 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced that by-elections will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2026, to fill five vacant legislative seats across four states: Gombe, Kano, Delta, and Bauchi. The affected constituencies include Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies in Bauchi State; and Udu State Constituency in Delta State.

Voting will occur at polling units within these constituencies from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. The vacancies were created due to various reasons: the federal constituency seat in Gombe became vacant following the death of incumbent lawmaker Yaya Bauchi Tongo in June 2026; the Sakwa State seat in Bauchi also became empty due to the death of its occupant; the Disina seat was vacated after its lawmaker resigned to contest a local government chairmanship; and the Udu constituency seat was declared vacant after former occupant Collins Egbetamah left to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress.

In Kano, Rabiu Shuaibu vacated the Dawakin Kudu State Assembly seat to contest the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency seat, which he won in June.
