Google Enhances AI Search with Hausa and Yorùbá Support

Google has rolled out new AI search features supporting the Hausa and Yorùbá languages, aimed at enhancing the search experience for Nigerian speakers. This update allows users in Nigeria, such as students in Kano and traders in Ibadan, to utilize AI-powered search in their mother tongues.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure AI inclusivity across the continent, expanding support to a total of 13 African languages, including Afrikaans, Akan, Amharic, Kinyarwanda, Afaan Oromoo, Somali, Sesotho, Kiswahili, Setswana, Wolof, and IsiZulu. Taiwo Kola Ogunlade from Google emphasized that this advancement goes beyond mere translation, requiring a nuanced understanding of local information.

The new language support aims to facilitate complex queries and improve the relevance of search results for Nigerian users, ensuring that technology reflects the identity and culture of the people it serves.
