Google Enhances AI Search with Local Language Support

Google has launched local language support for its AI search feature, allowing speakers of Nigerian languages, including Yoruba and Hausa, to utilize AI-powered search capabilities in their mother tongues. This update is part of a broader initiative aimed at enhancing artificial intelligence inclusivity across the African continent.

Mr. Taiwo Kola Ogunlade, the Public Affairs Manager for West Africa at Google, emphasized that building a truly global search experience goes beyond mere translation; it requires a nuanced understanding of local information. The advancements in multimodal reasoning capabilities have led to a custom version of the Gemini search, significantly improving language understanding.

The new language support extends to a total of 13 African languages, including Afrikaans, Akan, Amharic, Hausa, Kinyarwanda, Afaan Oromoo, Somali, Sesotho, Kiswahili, Setswana, Wolof, Yoruba, and isiZulu.
