Google Cloud: Engineers Use AI for Coding, Humans Accountable

Sailesh Krishnamurthi, Vice President of Database at Google Cloud, emphasized that engineers can use AI tools for coding, but the responsibility for every line of code remains with human engineers. He explained that while AI is becoming increasingly central to development work, accountability cannot be delegated to machines.

This aligns with Google's approach to integrating artificial intelligence into product design without compromising code quality. Krishnamurthi noted that regardless of AI's involvement, the individual who commits the code is fully responsible.

He highlighted that the open-source project PostgreSQL provides a robust environment for AI-assisted code development, making it easier for AI systems to understand structural patterns. Google has reported a significant portion of new code being generated with AI support, although human review remains critical.

The trend suggests that AI-assisted coding may become standard practice across the industry, particularly as companies migrate from legacy systems to cloud-native solutions.
