Benue Governor Alia Commits to Clearing Teacher Salaries

Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, the Governor of Benue State, has committed to addressing the 11-month salary arrears owed to teachers under the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). During the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration in Makurdi, represented by his deputy, Sam Ode, Alia announced that his administration would pay an additional month’s salary alongside regular monthly salaries until the outstanding debt is fully settled.
He emphasized the importance of education and pledged to improve the welfare, working conditions, and professional development of teachers. Alia noted that his government had adopted a harmonized retirement age for teachers and implemented an automated payroll system to enhance accountability.
Additionally, over 9,000 teachers have been recruited, and more than 400 classrooms have been constructed or renovated. The governor acknowledged the critical role of teachers in shaping the future of Benue and praised Dr. Grace Adagba, the SUBEB Executive Chairman, for her efforts in transforming basic education.
The event included a march-past and various presentations.
