Gowon Advocates Support for Tinubu’s Security Efforts

During the 50th anniversary celebration of Benu State held in Makurdi, former military ruler Yakubu Gowon called for support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s security initiatives. He described the nation’s security challenges as largely man-made but expressed optimism that the situation can be temporarily overcome through collective commitment and unity.

Gowon recalled the creation of Benu State during his administration, which concluded in 1976 under the regime of the late General Murtala Muhammed. He acknowledged the contributions of Benu State to national development and paid tribute to late Colonel Joseph Akahan, a former Chief of Army Staff who died in a helicopter crash.

Gowon noted Benu's vast agricultural potential and its reputation as Nigeria's food basket due to its fertile land and hardworking people. Former Nigerian Vice President Namadi Sambo also spoke at the event, emphasizing Benu's rich history and cultural heritage.
