DHRD Advocates for Real-Time Election Results in Nigeria

The Defence Human Rights Democracy (DHRD), a pro-democracy organization, is pushing for the mandatory real-time transmission of election results in Nigeria. They expressed disappointment that the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, did not approve this crucial measure, which they argue is essential to prevent electoral manipulation and voter apathy.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Port Harcourt, the group emphasized that the refusal to mandate real-time transmission is undemocratic and could lead to increased electoral fraud. DHRD highlighted that since the return to democracy in 1999, there have been significant improvements in the electoral process, but the current situation threatens these gains.

They called on civil society organizations to mobilize efforts for better electoral reforms and urged the National Assembly to revisit the issue to prevent civil unrest and promote citizen participation in the democratic process. DHRD reiterated its commitment to resist any actions that undermine democracy and stressed the importance of credible electoral outcomes.
