Group Urges INEC to Address Court Orders Before 2027 Elections

A group has submitted a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Prof. Joash Amupitan, expressing concerns over repeated court actions and conflicting orders regarding state constituencies.

The petition, titled “The Judicialisation of Democracy and the Unending Clamour for State Constituencies: A Threat to the Credibility of the 2027 General Elections,” was jointly submitted by Executive Director Abdul Muni Tijani and Director of Programmes Tijani Usman Shehu. The group argues that these legal disputes could create uncertainty for INEC and disrupt preparations for the upcoming 2027 elections.

While acknowledging the constitutional right of Nigerians to seek judicial redress, they caution against using litigation to undermine electoral preparations. The group calls for collaboration among the National Assembly, INEC, the Nigerian Bar Association, civil society organizations, and other democracy advocates to maintain the integrity of the electoral system.

They emphasize that the focus should be on ensuring that votes determine leadership rather than prolonged litigation.
