Guinea-Bissau Military Foils Coup Plot Ahead of Elections

The Guinea-Bissau military thwarted an attempted coup aimed at subverting the constitutional order and disrupting the forthcoming elections. Several senior officials, including Deputy Chief of Staff General Mamadu Ture, were arrested for their alleged involvement in the failed plot.

The move was seen as an attempt to derail the electoral process ahead of the November general elections. President Umaro Sissoco Embalo warned against instability during the campaign period.

The country has a history of political instability and military takeovers but has been making progress towards democratic governance.
