Dommaraju Gukesh, the Indian chess prodigy, celebrated his 20th birthday on Thursday but experienced a bitter loss against world number one Magnus Carlsen during the fourth round of Norway Chess 2026 held in Oslo. Gukesh, born in Chennai, aimed for a victory as a birthday gift but was defeated in 42 moves.

Carlsen, using the black pieces and the Ragozin Defense, showcased his mastery in the game. Gukesh initially played strongly with the white pieces, gradually losing control as Carlsen executed a powerful strategy, culminating in a rook charge on the b-file and a final passed pawn.
