Gulf States Urge UN to Condemn Iran's Strikes

On Wednesday, six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Jordan called for an urgent session of the United Nations Human Rights Council to address Iran's strikes across the Gulf region, which have significantly impacted civilians. The conflict escalated on February 28 when the United States and Israel began attacks on Iran, prompting Iranian retaliation against Gulf nations.

The 47-member council is considering a draft resolution condemning Iran's actions in the strongest terms, expressing grave concern over attacks on energy infrastructure and demanding an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities. Bahrain's representative emphasized the need for reparations for victims, while Kuwait highlighted attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Saudi Arabia's ambassador condemned the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, asserting that Iran's actions represent gross violations of international law. Iran's ambassador warned that Israel's actions could lead to chaos, while the UN rights chief, Volker Turk, indicated a second urgent debate would focus on deadly strikes against Iranian schools.
