Gumi Condemns Kidnapping Crisis, Urges Government Action

On Thursday, Sheikh Gumi condemned the individuals responsible for the ongoing kidnapping crisis in Nigeria, particularly in response to the abduction of university student John Arum, who was taken by gunmen demanding a ransom of 30 million naira. Gumi described the perpetrators as having lost their humanity and highlighted the country's severe security challenges that cannot be resolved through force alone.

He argued that counter-insurgency efforts should focus on non-kinetic strategies, including dialogue and religious reorientation, citing security experts who maintain that 25% of efforts should be military-based while 75% should involve non-violent measures. Gumi warned that insecurity remains a serious and widespread threat, criticizing the slow response of government institutions and the gap created by inaction that empowers non-state actors.

He previously engaged in negotiations with armed groups in the northwest and emphasized dialogue as a key tool for resolving crises. Following Arum's abduction, there is a 48-hour ultimatum for the federal government to secure his release, or nationwide protests will ensue.
