Nigerian-American Innovator Creates Hair-Braiding Robot

Yinka Ogunbiyi, a Nigerian-American engineer and Harvard graduate, has created the world's first hair-braiding robot, addressing the longstanding manual nature of hair braiding that has persisted for 5,000 years. Ogunbiyi's inspiration came during the COVID-19 lockdown in London when she attempted to braid her own hair, leading her to question the time-consuming process.

Her startup, HaloBraid, has raised funding from a venture capital firm founded by a Reddit co-founder, with additional participation from other investors. The robot is designed to automate the intricate finger movements required for braiding, which can lead to physical strain for professional braiders.

Ogunbiyi estimates that people spend around 8 billion hours braiding hair annually, and a survey indicated that 95% of respondents would prefer to braid more often if the process took less time. The robot must maintain consistent tension, avoid tangling, and adapt to different clients' hair types, making it a significant challenge in robotics.
