Nigerian-American Raises $7M for Braiding Robot Innovation

Yinka Ogunbiyi, a Nigerian-American biomechanical engineer and Harvard graduate, has successfully raised $7 million in seed funding to commercialize HaloBraid, a patented braid-assist robot. This innovation aims to revolutionize the hair-braiding industry by enabling stylists to complete appointments in nearly half the usual time and alleviating the physical strain associated with repetitive tasks.

The funding round was led by Seven Seven Six, founded by Alexis Ohanian, with additional support from AlleyCorp and Bling Capital. Over 7,000 professional salons have already expressed interest, joining a waiting list for the technology.

Ogunbiyi's inspiration for HaloBraid arose during the COVID-19 pandemic after she experienced the labor-intensive nature of braiding her own hair. The robot is designed to work collaboratively with stylists, automating the mid-shaft braiding process while allowing professionals to maintain creative control.

Ogunbiyi emphasizes that the technology is intended to enhance the salon experience rather than diminish it.
