Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship: Three Dead, Many Ill

A hantavirus outbreak has been reported aboard a cruise ship currently anchored off the coast of Cape Verde, affecting 149 people. The outbreak has resulted in three fatalities and left others in serious condition.

Hantavirus is primarily carried by rodents such as rats and mice and is known to cause severe illness in humans, particularly when it progresses to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HP). Symptoms can resemble those of the flu, including fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, chills, nausea, and stomach pain, typically appearing within eight weeks of exposure.

The virus is not new but has gained attention due to its association with a recent outbreak. Hantavirus is not spread through casual contact and is primarily transmitted through contact with rodent urine, feces, or saliva.

The current outbreak is unusual as it has occurred aboard a ship, far from areas where the virus is typically endemic.
