Spanish Citizen Tests Positive for Hantavirus in Madrid

A Spanish citizen tested positive for hantavirus following a PCR test conducted upon arrival in Madrid from the MV Hondiu cruise ship. The Madrid Health Ministry confirmed the case late Monday, stating that the individual was immediately placed in isolation at Gomez Ulla Hospital.

Although the patient tested positive, they did not exhibit active symptoms of the disease at the time of the report. Health authorities are currently awaiting final results, which are expected within hours to confirm the infection status.

Additionally, 13 other Spanish evacuees from the vessel tested negative for the virus and were also placed in isolation at Gomez Ulla Hospital. The MV Hondiu had previously been identified as affected by the disease, prompting the evacuation of passengers.

The PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test allows for rapid detection of the virus, even in the absence of outward illness.
