Alake Defends Tinubu's Fuel Subsidy Removal Decision

Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals and recently appointed Director of Strategic Communications for the Tinubu 2027 presidential campaign, defended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to remove the fuel subsidy during an interactive session with the All Progressives Congress Press Corps in Abuja. Alake stated that Tinubu accepted the political consequences of this reform to enhance Nigeria’s economy, unlike previous administrations that delayed the decision due to fears of public backlash and electoral repercussions.

He emphasized that past governments recognized the need for subsidy removal but lacked the courage to act, often backtracking due to impending elections. Alake commended Tinubu for taking the difficult step to implement the reform, which he believes is essential for resetting the nation’s economy.

He also pointed out that the beneficiaries of the fuel subsidy were primarily oil cartels, who profited from the system at the expense of the Nigerian populace.
