Alake Urges Support for Tinubu's Economic Reforms

Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, addressed the need for patience regarding President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms during a press interaction in Abuja. He emphasized that Nigeria requires policy consistency rather than a reversal of reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies.

Alake argued that the reforms are yielding results at both macroeconomic and household levels, despite the economic challenges stemming from years of accumulated distortions. He noted that previous administrations avoided necessary economic decisions due to political fears, but the Tinubu administration has shown the courage to implement these changes.

Alake dismissed claims that the subsidy removal was poorly timed, asserting that continuing the subsidy would exacerbate the economic crisis and primarily benefit wealthy Nigerians and fuel cartels. He explained that funds previously allocated to subsidies could now support infrastructure and productive sectors.

Alake compared the reform process to repairing a damaged vehicle, acknowledging the pain involved but asserting that it leads to eventual benefits.
