DufuHS Offers Free Respiratory Treatment at Ebonyi Rice Mill

The DufuHS has commenced a health outreach program at the Ebonyi rice mill, targeting over 200 patients exhibiting respiratory symptoms. This initiative, led by Professor Jess Uneke, the principal investigator, and supported by the Vice Chancellor of DufuHS, aims to provide comprehensive treatment, including referrals for those diagnosed.

The outreach is critical as the rice mill is a significant economic hub in Nigeria, yet health conditions for workers, especially women exposed to rice dust, have been neglected. Professor Uneke emphasized the importance of respiratory screenings and the need for adequate protective gear for workers.

The team will utilize diagnostic tools, including spirometry machines, to assess lung function and identify respiratory impairments. Professor Techla Ezeonu highlighted the necessity of this outreach due to the high incidence of respiratory conditions among rice mill workers, aiming to improve early detection and treatment awareness of respiratory health challenges.
