Heavy Rain Causes Severe Flooding in Lagos, Disrupts Life

Heavy rainfall over several hours caused widespread flooding across major parts of Lagos, submerging homes and disrupting movement. The downpour began late Sunday and continued into Monday, affecting thousands of residents.

Areas severely impacted include Lekki, Victoria Island, Oshodi, Ikeja, Agege, Gbagada, Oworonsoki, Yaba, Oyingbo, and Maryland. Major roads such as Ikorodu Road and the Lagos-Oshodi Expressway became difficult to access due to flooding, trapping motorists and causing significant traffic congestion.

Residents expressed frustration over recurring flooding issues and questioned the effectiveness of drainage and flood control measures. Mr.

Wasiu from Yaba described the flooding as a recurring problem that severely affects daily life, while Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, attributed the worsening situation to blocked drainage channels and illegal property developments obstructing water flow.

Despite the flooding, there were no official reports of casualties at the time of the report.
