Murtala Muhammed Airport Ranks Tenth in Africa's Busiest

In March 2026, Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, Nigeria, was ranked as the tenth busiest airport in Africa, managing 483,048 seats, which represents a 16.8% increase from the 436,473 seats handled in March 2025. This growth is part of a broader trend in African air travel, which saw an 11.7% year-on-year increase in revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) according to a report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The airport serves as Nigeria's main international gateway, connecting Lagos to various destinations across Africa, Europe, and North America. MMIA is currently undergoing significant upgrades, including a N712 billion modernization project approved by the federal government, which encompasses the rehabilitation of Terminal 1, expansion of Terminal 2, improvements to road access, and the construction of connecting facilities.

These enhancements aim to reinforce MMIA's critical role in Nigeria's aviation business and tourism sector, ensuring efficient handling of high passenger volumes.
