Nigeria's N712 Billion Airport Renovation Project Underway

The Nigerian government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is addressing the urgent need to modernize and expand the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. Originally designed to handle 250,000 to 300,000 passengers annually since 1979, the airport now accommodates nearly three million passengers per year.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is managing a N712 billion project that includes rehabilitating and expanding terminal facilities and runway infrastructure to meet global safety standards. Significant changes have already been made, including the construction of new roads and the installation of advanced security measures.

Despite previous efforts under former President Muhammadu Buhari and former Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika, challenges remain, particularly with airlines hesitant to relocate to the new terminal due to past fire incidents. The project aims to transform the airport into a modern facility capable of competing with the best in Africa, with completion expected by February 23, 2026.
