Flights Resume at Murtala Airport After Fire Outbreak

On February 23, 2026, a fire broke out at the old Terminal 1 building of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, leading to a temporary halt in flight operations. The Lagos Police Command confirmed that emergency responders successfully contained the blaze, which disrupted flight schedules and stranded passengers.

ASP Moham Adeola described the operation as a coordinated effort among multiple emergency agencies, which battled the flames for several hours. Thick smoke was seen billowing from the terminal, affecting operations around the control tower.

Fortunately, twelve workers trapped near the control tower were safely evacuated and received immediate medical attention, with no fatalities reported. Following the incident, flight operations resumed fully, although the old Terminal 1 building remains closed to the public pending further safety assessments and clearance from relevant authorities.
