Honda Unveils Wireless Charging Tech for Moving EVs

Honda has developed a wireless charging system that can supply electricity to electric vehicles while they are in motion, including large commercial vehicles. This technology was created by Honda's research and development subsidiary, Honda R&D, in collaboration with Taisei Corporation and Taisei Rotec Corporation.
The companies plan to conduct public-road demonstrations in Japan starting from the 2027 fiscal year, which begins in April 2027. The system transfers electricity from charging equipment embedded in roads to vehicles through wireless power transfer, potentially reducing the need for frequent stops at charging stations.
Testing has been conducted on a dedicated test roadway to evaluate wireless power transfer performance and road structures suitable for large commercial vehicles weighing approximately 20 tonnes. The companies are also assessing the durability of the pavement and embedded charging units, with plans to test power output of up to 150 kilowatts.
Further testing will focus on wireless power transfer at high vehicle speeds, with practical deployment anticipated from 2027.
