Toyota and IVECO Team Up for Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trucks

Toyota and IVECO have announced a collaboration under the EMPOWER project, funded by the EU's Horizon Europe initiative, aimed at advancing zero-emission heavy-duty transport. Toyota will supply the fuel cell system for IVECO’s new-generation fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs).

This partnership leverages Toyota's advanced fuel cell technology, developed over three decades, while IVECO will oversee vehicle development and integration. The new FCEVs promise significant improvements in performance compared to IVECO’s first-generation fuel cell trucks from the H2Haul project.

The IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell, powered by Toyota fuel cell systems with a total output of 300 kW, boasts a driving range exceeding 900 km and durability of over 25,000 operating hours. Validation and testing are scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2023, with on-road trials expected to begin in the first half of 2027.

This initiative aims to create commercially viable hydrogen-powered solutions for long-haul transport, emphasizing sustainability and operational performance.
