Nigerian Widow Recounts Husband's Abduction by SARS in 2017, Exposing Police Brutality

In June 2017, John Anozi, a resident of Abia State, Nigeria, was forcefully taken from his home by armed men in mufti, later identified as operatives of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) from the Awkuzu branch in Anambra State. The gang, led by Anthony Obiozor and Ikechukwu Emeana Uzochukwu, ransacked the house, seized valuables, and abducted John Anozi at gunpoint.

Nnenna Anozi, his widow, narrates the traumatic experience of her husband's disappearance and the subsequent demands for ransom. The incident highlights the notorious history of SARS, known for arbitrary arrests, disappearances, and extrajudicial killings.

Following nationwide protests in October 2020, SARS was disbanded, and investigations into police atrocities were initiated. The widow's testimony contributes to the ongoing quest for justice and accountability for victims of police brutality in Nigeria.
