House of Reps Criticize AEDC's Power Distribution Policy

The House of Representatives' ad hoc committee is investigating the power sector reform expenditures from 2006 to 2024 and has strongly criticized the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for its discriminatory electricity distribution policy. The committee's oversight visit to AEDC's corporate headquarters in Abuja revealed that the company allocates 80% of its electricity supply to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) while distributing only 20% among Kogi, Niger, and Nasarawa states within its franchise area.

This distribution model has been described as unfair and economically damaging to the affected states. Hon. Mustapha Aliyu, the committee chairman, emphasized that every state within the distribution company's coverage area deserves equitable treatment.

In response, AEDC's Managing Director, Chijiok Okwuokeny, denied any discriminatory intent, attributing the distribution pattern to commercial realities, including high levels of energy theft, weak infrastructure, and low revenue recovery rates.
