House of Reps Summons INEC Chair Over 2027 Election Readiness

Nigeria's House of Representatives has demanded that the Independent National Electoral Commission provide a detailed briefing on its preparedness for the 2027 general elections. Prof. Joash Amupitan, who heads INEC, must report to the House Committee on Electoral Matters.

He has been given seven legislative days to deliver this presentation to address mounting operational concerns. The summons focuses on multiple critical operational areas.

Lawmakers seek briefings covering the Continuous Voter Registration drive, Permanent Voter Card distribution efforts, election logistics, deployment of technology systems, personnel training initiatives, arrangements for electoral security, and funding allocations. Underlying these requests is concern that operational failures or insecurity in certain regions could prevent qualified voters from participating in the ballot.

One opposition party has flagged additional concerns. The African Democratic Congress has cautioned President Bola Tinubu against leveraging the recent Ebola outbreak to delay the January 16, 2027 election scheduled for that date.

This allegation from the ADC signals broader unease among political players regarding whether the electoral calendar can remain stable. The summons originated from a motion jointly filed by the House Minority Whip and fellow members of parliament.
