Nigeria's Housing Sector Stakeholders Validate Key Policies

The Federal Government of Nigeria convened key stakeholders in the housing and built environment sector to validate two significant policy documents intended to strengthen regulation and establish a credible national housing data system. Engr.

Dr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, stated that this workshop was the final chance for stakeholders to influence the policies before their presentation to the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

Participants included representatives from Federal and State Governments, the World Bank, the National Population Commission, the National Bureau of Statistics, and the Central Bank of Nigeria. Engr.

Darma highlighted that Nigeria's housing sector, contributing approximately ₦77 trillion to the economy in 2025, lacks an effective regulatory framework, leaving many vulnerable to fraud and poor consumer protection. He proposed reforms similar to Dubai's regulatory practices to enhance trust and protect homebuyers, including licensing for developers and estate agents, escrow protection for buyers’ funds, and improved construction quality.
