Governor Dauda Lawal Exits PDP After Court Ruling

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has officially announced his departure from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) following an Appeal Court judgment that upheld a Federal High Court ruling. The ruling restrains the PDP from conducting a national convention scheduled for November 15-16, 2025.

The court dismissed an appeal filed by the PDP, challenging the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court to entertain the suit. Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam stated that the PDP violated constitutional provisions regarding the conduct of conventions.

Deputy Governor Mani Mummuni also announced his defection to the APC, citing a necessary step for the state's interest amid ongoing legal battles affecting the PDP. Lawal's decision to join the APC was made after consultations with stakeholders in Zamfara State.

Despite previous efforts to reconcile factions within the PDP, these attempts failed, leading to prolonged legal disputes that hindered the party's ability to field candidates for the 2027 general elections.
