Channels TV Cameraman Kani Ben Dies After Accident

Kani Ben, a cameraman for Channels Television, passed away on February 12, 2023, after spending ten days in the intensive care unit at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi State. He was involved in a road accident on February 6, 2023, along Yashi Yelwan Duguri Road in Alkaleri Local Government Area while covering a project for the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

The accident, which injured 13 journalists, occurred when the vehicle carrying them attempted to overtake a convoy and veered off the road, somersaulting multiple times. Ben sustained severe spinal cord injuries and underwent surgery but remained in critical condition until his death.

The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) expressed shock and grief over his passing and announced the suspension of its congress scheduled for February 16 until further notice. Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed also expressed condolences, highlighting the risks journalists face in their line of duty.
