Tinubu Reflects on UK Refuge During Military Era

During a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu shared his experiences of finding safety in the United Kingdom during Nigeria's military era. He recalled residing under the protection of the Metropolitan Police amid threats from the military regime.

Tinubu expressed deep gratitude for the support the UK extended to Nigeria during its dark years of military dictatorship, particularly during the pro-democracy struggles that intensified in the 1990s, following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election believed to have been won by Moshood Kashimawo Abiola under the regime of Ibrahim Babangida. He highlighted ongoing security challenges, particularly terrorism linked to instability in the Sahel region, and stressed the importance of continued collaboration between the UK and West Africa to tackle these complex issues.

This visit marks the first official trip of a Nigerian leader to the UK in 37 years, with Tinubu also noting the shared values and commitment to progress between the nations.
