Social Media Commentator Dan Shagamu Murdered Amid Threats

Dan Shagamu, 54, a social media commentator known for his political and community commentary under the brand Dan Shagamu International, appealed for help from the Kano State Government, the Emir of Kano, and the police due to death threats from his neighbors. In a video, he described harassment, including children throwing stones at him and insulting him.

Despite reporting the threats to local village heads, the situation remained unresolved. Tragically, he was murdered in the early hours of Wednesday after unidentified men broke into his home.

The police confirmed the arrest of two suspects related to the killing, but CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa stated that preliminary findings did not connect the murder to Shagamu's social media activities, attributing it instead to "pure envy and hatred by neighbors." His earlier warnings about his safety have gained renewed attention following his death, highlighting the risks faced by social media commentators in Nigeria.
