How senators’ monthly earnings are capable of funding salaries of over 4,000 professors – Report

A recent report has revealed that the monthly earnings of Nigerian senators could cover the salaries of over 4,000 university professors. Senator Kawu Sumaila of Kano South disclosed that each senator receives N21 million monthly, including office running costs, equivalent to the salary of 43 senior professors.

In contrast, professors in Nigerian universities earn significantly less, with many struggling to make ends meet. Dr.

Niyi Sunmonu, the National President of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA), highlighted that Nigerian academics have seen minimal pay increases since 2009, leading to financial difficulties. Without urgent salary improvements, the quality of Nigeria's universities could decline drastically in the next five to ten years.

Professors from various universities expressed their concerns over the meager salaries, emphasizing the need for government intervention to address the systemic challenges facing the education sector.
