The attack was described as brutal, with witnesses reporting that the bandits opened fire on congregants shortly after the prayer began. The massacre is believed to be a retaliatory strike, as days earlier, villagers had ambushed the bandits, killing one and rescuing an abducted victim.

The Katsina state government confirmed 13 deaths and several injuries, with security forces deployed to flush out the criminal gang responsible.
