Retired CP Akinfenwa Calls for Police Reform in Nigeria

In an interview, retired Commissioner of Police Dr. Sybil Olufunmilayo Akinfenwa discussed the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in Nigeria's police system. She emphasized the importance of empowering police divisions with adequate resources to enhance operational efficiency and improve public trust.

Akinfenwa proposed the establishment of state police structures integrated with community policing to address the challenges currently faced by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). She highlighted the necessity for police divisions to have sufficient service vehicles, supplies, and equipment to operate effectively.

Furthermore, she stressed the importance of personnel welfare and logistics management at the division level to boost police morale and performance. Akinfenwa noted that these reforms would significantly impact crime control nationwide and called for a focus on grassroots-level policing.

She reiterated that the creation of state police should not replicate existing challenges and must ensure effective training and management of personnel.
