Prof. Olaopa Advocates Against Procurement Abuse in Nigeria

During a webinar organized by the Public Procurement Association of Nigeria (PPAN) on Saturday, Prof. Tunji Olaopa, Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), addressed the issue of procurement abuse in Nigeria.

He highlighted that public procurement should not be viewed merely as a purchasing function but as a critical instrument for economic growth and national development. Olaopa stressed the importance of integrity in public expenditure and proposed a shift in the procurement culture to prevent corruption and mismanagement.

He called for a merit-based system in contract awards, moving away from practices that favor personal gain and nepotism. Olaopa also urged the need for a robust digital transformation in procurement processes to enhance transparency and efficiency, including the implementation of an e-procurement system.

He emphasized the role of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) in setting standards and ensuring compliance, advocating for a comprehensive database of contractors and a proactive approach to procurement planning to combat corrupt practices.
