Human Rights Lawyer Blames Politicians, Not IPOB, for Cultism in South-East Nigeria

Human rights advocate Chidi Odinkalu has pointed fingers at politicians for the rise of cult violence in South-East Nigeria, contradicting the common belief that IPOB is solely responsible. Odinkalu emphasized that political actors are the main financiers of deadly cult groups, causing fear and unrest in communities.

Despite the prevalent blame on IPOB for crimes in the region, Odinkalu highlighted the significant role of political interests in escalating gang threats. The South-East has witnessed a surge in killings, kidnappings, and attacks on civilians and traditional rulers, with Anambra, Imo, Enugu, Abia, and Ebonyi being particularly affected.
