PeacePro Alerts on Humanitarian Crisis in North-West IDP Camps
The Foundation for Peace Professionals (PeacePro) has issued a warning regarding a looming humanitarian disaster in the internally displaced persons (IDP) camps across the North-West. Abdulrazaq Hamzat, the executive director of PeacePro, stated that urgent intervention is needed to provide food, safe drinking water, shelter, sanitation, and healthcare.
Observations made in Zamfara, Katsina, and Sokoto States revealed serious concerns about the welfare of displaced individuals. During a visit to Sokoto State, PeacePro identified over 30 IDP camps, including those in the Sabon Birni area.
In Zamfara, camps were noted at Tsunami Camp, Government Secondary School Tsunami, Mareri, Tudun Wada, Unguwar Gwaza in Gusau, as well as in Anka, Lalan, and Premier. Hamzat emphasized that inadequate resources could lead to preventable diseases and health emergencies.
He urged the federal and state governments, emergency management agencies, and humanitarian organizations to assess the camps and mobilize emergency assistance.
