HURIWA Urges Kaduna Government to Rehabilitate Displaced Communities

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the Kaduna State Government to rehabilitate communities displaced by insecurity following the recovery of more than 500,000 hectares of farmland from bandits. In a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, HURIWA commended Governor Uba Sani and security agencies for enabling farmers to access their lands again.

However, the organization stressed that the recovery of farmland must be accompanied by measures ensuring the safe return and rehabilitation of displaced residents. HURIWA highlighted the broader implications of this recovery, noting that it could enhance agricultural production, restore household incomes, and improve food security.

The group proposed a “recover, restore and rebuild” program, urging the government to identify displaced landowners, verify ownership claims, and provide necessary infrastructure for sustainable resettlement. Additionally, HURIWA called for targeted economic assistance for returning farmers and the establishment of community-based early warning systems to prevent future violence.
