Jonathan's Risky Peace Negotiations in Niger Delta

Former President Goodluck Jonathan recounted his experiences negotiating peace in the Niger Delta, highlighting the risks he took by entering militant camps unarmed to foster dialogue. Speaking at the Niger Delta Development Commission conference in Yenagoa, he described his childhood connection to the oil industry and his academic background in environmental management.

Jonathan recalled leading negotiations with militants, where he insisted on visiting camps without armed escorts to build trust. This approach was pivotal in the peace process that led to the Niger Delta Amnesty Program.

He stressed that the development of the Niger Delta remains a national priority and that peace in the region depends on addressing environmental degradation and decades of neglect. Jonathan's visit to the camps involved navigating security concerns, as he was advised against going without protection, but he maintained that peace development required direct engagement with the militants.
